Why A4

Why sellers print 4 labels per A4 sheet

When you are starting out or shipping a few dozen orders a day, an A4 printer is often the printer you already own. Four labels per sheet makes it practical.

  • Works with the printer you have

Any office inkjet or laser printer that takes A4 paper can print the sheet. You do not need a thermal label printer to get started.
  • Fits 4-part sticker sheets

A4 sticker sheets split into four parts are easy to buy. Print the labels on them, peel and stick, or print on plain paper and cut along the guides.
  • A quarter of the paper

Marketplace PDFs often give each label a whole A4 page with the invoice below. Four labels per sheet uses far fewer sheets for the same orders.

Layout

How the A4 layout is built

The measurements are fixed, so every sheet comes out the same and you can cut a whole stack the same way.

  • 2×2 grid on A4

Each sheet is a standard A4 page, 210 × 297 mm, split into four equal quarters, two across and two down.
  • Margin and gap

There is an outer margin of 18 pt (about 6 mm) and a 12 pt (about 4 mm) gap between labels, which leaves room for cutting and for printers that cannot print to the edge.
  • Cut guides

Thin dashed grey lines mark where to cut. They sit in the gaps, not on the labels.
  • Scaled, never stretched

Each label is scaled to fit its quarter while keeping its proportions. A tall Meesho label and a wider Flipkart label both keep their shape.
  • Footer strip under each label

If you add an order number, your own text or the date and time, it goes in a strip under the label and is scaled along with it. It is never printed over the label.
  • Fills sheets in order

Labels fill each sheet left to right, top to bottom, in the order you chose. A last sheet with fewer than four labels simply has empty quarters.

Steps

Make A4 label sheets in four steps

  1. Step 1: Add your PDFs

Pick the marketplace, then drag in the label PDFs from your seller panel or use Choose files.
  2. Step 2: Turn on 4 per A4

Switch on “4 labels per A4 page”. Add the order number, a short note or the date under each label if you want them.
  3. Step 3: Generate

The labels are read as soon as you add the files. Press Generate Labels PDF and they are cropped and placed on A4 sheets in your browser.
  4. Step 4: Download and print

Download the PDF, open it in a new tab to check the sheets, then print one test page before printing the rest.

Printing

Printing tips for A4 label sheets

  • Print at 100%. In the print dialog choose “Actual size” or a scale of 100%. Turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”, or every label will come out smaller.
  • Set the paper to A4. Some printers default to Letter. A wrong paper size shifts the labels away from the sticker parts.
  • Test one sheet first. Print a single page on plain paper, hold it against a sticker sheet and scan one barcode with your phone before you print the rest.
  • Feed sticker sheets the right way up. Check which side your printer prints on before loading a full stack.

When to use label-size pages instead

If you have a thermal label printer, turn the A4 layout off. Each label then gets its own page sized to the label, which suits a roll of labels. Print it at actual size as well.

Combine A4 sheets with sorting

The A4 layout follows whatever order you pick. Turn on SKU sorting and the labels for one product sit together on the same sheets, so you can cut a sheet and pack those orders straight away. See how SKU sorting works, or read the full guide on how to print 4 shipping labels on A4.

Printers

Print on A4 sheets or a label printer

Print 4 labels on one A4 sheet

To print shipping labels on A4, turn on 4 labels per A4 page. The tool lays out your shipping labels A4 sheet by sheet in a 2×2 grid, so you print 4 labels on one A4 page. In other words, you print 4 shipping labels on one page. The result is a shipping label A4 PDF that any office laser or inkjet printer can print.

If you were searching for an A4 shipping label template, this does the same job without one. You never place labels into a shipping label template by hand; the layout is built for you every time.

Use a shipping label printer instead

Many sellers use a shipping label printer: a thermal printer such as a 4x6 label printer, a barcode label printer or a mailing label printer. For these, turn 4 labels per A4 off. Each label is then saved on its own page, sized to the label, ready for a roll of labels.

A label printer for small business, for example a Dymo shipping label printer or a Rollo label printer, prints a PDF like any other printer. Set the paper size to your label size in the print dialog and choose actual size or fit to label. The tool has not been tested on every shipping label printer for small business, so print one label first and check that the barcode scans before you print the whole batch.
