How-to guide

How to Sort Shipping Labels by SKU

Marketplace PDFs list labels in order of when the order came in, not by product. If you sort shipping labels by SKU before printing, you can take one product off the shelf and pack all of its orders in one go.

These steps work for Flipkart, Meesho and Amazon. Pickup sorting is extra and only for Meesho.

Step by step

Sort labels by SKU in six steps

Open the shipping label SKU sorting tool and follow along.

  1. Step 1: Add the day’s label PDFs

Open the SKU sorting tool, choose Meesho, Amazon or Flipkart and add every label PDF you want to pack in this round.

  2. Step 2: Choose SKU under Sort labels by

In the Grouping options, set Sort labels by to SKU. Labels with the same SKU will come out next to each other, and labels with equal SKUs keep their original order.

  3. Step 3: Turn on pickup sorting if you need it

For Meesho you can also switch on Pickup sorting. Labels are then grouped by courier first and sorted by SKU inside each courier group.

  4. Step 4: Add the SKU and order summary

Switch on SKU and order summary to get a page at the end that lists each SKU with its number of orders and total quantity. Use it as your picking list.

  5. Step 5: Use the combined PDF for many files

After processing, download the combined PDF. It merges the labels from all files and sorts them together, so one SKU is not split across several files.

  6. Step 6: Check the Unknown SKU group

Labels where no SKU could be read are kept and grouped as Unknown SKU. Look at those labels by eye and pack them separately.

Where the SKU comes from

The tool reads the SKU from the text in the PDF, so it is only as good as what the marketplace prints. On Flipkart it comes from the SKU ID column of the product table on the label. On Meesho it comes from the SKU column of the Product Details table. On Amazon it is taken from the item description on the invoice page, which is then matched to its label by order ID.

A packing routine that uses the sorted file

  1. Print the summary page first and use it to pick stock: it tells you how many of each SKU you need.
  2. Print the labels. They come out grouped, in the same order as the summary.
  3. Pack one SKU group at a time and stick each label as you go.
  4. Leave the Unknown SKU labels for last and check each one against its order.

If you also used pickup sorting, do this per courier, so each courier’s parcels end up in one pile ready for pickup.

When sorting may not help

If almost every order is a different product, grouping by SKU changes little. Pickup sorting on its own, or no sorting at all, may suit you better. The summary page is still useful as a count of what went out that day.

FAQ

SKU sorting questions

What to expect from the sorted file.

The SKU could not be read from that page. This happens with scanned or re-saved PDFs, and with Amazon files where the invoice pages were removed, because the Amazon SKU comes from the invoice. The labels are still printed; they just sit in their own group.
